Make that another Filipino in the main draw of the Philippine Open Pool Championships.
Overseas Filipino Worker Allan Cuartero became the seventh player to earn a seat in the Stage 2 event following a 9-4 triumph over Andrew Kong of Hong Kong Sunday night at the Star Billiards Center.
Cuartero becomes the first OFW to make it to the main draw, as well as the fourth Pinoy to secure a berth in Stage 2 coming off the qualifying event.
A spectacular bank shot on the No. 2 ball, which was well-covered by No. 6, clinched the win for the Kuwait-based Filipino player.
By sinking the No. 2 ball off a difficult angle on the side, Cuartero was able to dispatch of the remaining balls one by one, all the way to ending the match.
“Tsamba lang talaga ‘yun," said Cuartero, a house pro player in Kuwait. “Pero yun na lang ang natitirang tira doon, eh. Suwerte naman, pumasok."
Despite the win, Cuartero wasn’t satisfied with his game, saying his semifinals performance was far better than his finals outing.
“Masama ang tira ko, tatlong beses akong sumablay ng madadaling tira," said Cuartero. “Pero mabigat ang tournament dito, maski sa qualifying stage pa lang."
By winning over Kong, Cuartero continued the Filipinos’ overwhelming number of entries in the main draw of this event sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association.
The Filipinos started their dominance in the qualifying event beginning the second day.
Jundel Mazon and Roberto Gomez barged into the Stage 2 event with convincing victories over their rivals on the second day. The following day, it was Renemar David’s turn to join his compatriots as he pulled off a king-sized upset over the favored Pei Wei Chang of Chinese Taipei.
Pei is a former World Pool Championship runner-up, but he was stunned by the former junior standout David, 9-5, Saturday.
