New graduates have résumés blessed before going job-hunting

Aside from relying on their school degrees, wit and charm, some members of Batch 2011 are taking an extra step to land a job: having a priest bless their résumés.
But bishops reminded the graduates not to depend solely on the blessing in applying for jobs, saying they should also rely on their own efforts as well.
"We all know how difficult it is to find a job nowadays so I was thinking maybe if I pray here and have my résumé blessed it would help me land a job," Nica, a nursing graduate who had her resume blessed at the Monasterio de Santa Clara in Quezon City, said in an interview posted on the Union of Catholic Asian News website.
A separate report on dzBB radio quoted Quiapo Church rector Msgr. Clemente Ignacio as saying he had received many requests to "bless" the résumés of new graduates looking for a job.
But while Catholic Church officials said they are not surprised by the practice, some reminded graduates not to rely solely on God's help.
Other officials advised the graduates not to feel bad if they do not immediately land the job they want, even with a "blessed" resume.
"It’s right to ask blessings from God because based on our experience many prayers are really being answered... A blessing is also a prayer – it is not done on sacred objects only," Quiapo Church rector Msgr. Clemente Ignacio said.
But he said not getting the job may also be part of God's plan, and that he may have something better in store.
“All prayers are answered but it depends on how God answers our prayers because sometimes there is a better plan for us," he added.
Legaspi Bishop Joel Baylon, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY), reminded job applicants to do their part as well.
“It’s okay to ask for help but an individual should also make some effort because a career is not something that is automatically given to us," he said.
UCAN cited figures from the Philippine Commission on Higher Education that some 431,592 students were expected to graduate this year.
